Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Rangers have agreed a new contract with teenage centre-back Leon King, staving off interest from the likes of Premier League Man United.
The transfer journalist and Twitter personality took to the social media platform to claim that the Gers have struck a new three-and-a-half year deal with the 18-year-old which will tie King to the club until 2026.
The new contract comes after Leon King was handed a string of top opportunities at Ibrox this season amid a defensive injury crisis, with the centre-back playing in all six Champions League group games.
Whilst Rangers were humbled in the groups, King’s exposure to the first team at this level was an invaluable learning experience and the talented teenager has already made 20 appearances for the Gers this season.
“Important update for Rangers FC,” tweets Fabrizio Romano.
“Been told Leon King has agreed new contract valid until June 2026, here we go.
“Scottish top talented centre back is on the list of many top Premier League clubs — new deal in place, to be signed in the next days.”
Rangers eye fresh Leon King contract
The new contract also comes amid a series of high-profile links to the Premier League, with Fabrizio Romano claiming Man United, Newcastle United and Leeds United were all monitoring Leon King earlier in the season.
Rangers have repeatedly held off high profile interest in the young centre-back and the club have seemingly done enough to convince King his future lies with the Gers.
Rangers will be hoping Leon King can continue to develop at Ibrox over the next few seasons before cashing in to make a pretty penny from that Premier League interest.
The Gers already banked up to £16m from the sale of fellow Academy talent Nathan Patterson in January of this year, when the right-back moved to Everton.
If Leon King continues on his career trajectory, and Rangers can protect their interests with a new contract, expect the centre-back to follow suit in the months and years ahead.
Meanwhile, Rangers have reportedly set their sights on a January target currently plying his trade in the MLS.
