As Rangers are linked to ex-River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo, we’ll forgive some supporters for getting excited about the potential next manager at Ibrox.
After all the Argentine manager is a born winner who – after eight successful years at the helm of arguably the country’s biggest club – is now looking for a move to Europe.
Having won the Argentina Primera Division with River, as well as the Copa Sudamerica and the Copa Libertadores, Marcelo Gallardo racked up 14 trophy wins and wound up with a statue outside Estadio Monumental.
Linked to the likes of Ligue 1 giants PSG as early as April, Marcelo Gallardo is probably the biggest name yet to be mentioned in the next Rangers manager stakes.
But whilst we don’t want to be the bearer of bad news – or burst anyone’s bubble – links to the former Monaco, PSG and Argentina international midfielder appear to be a little circular.

Rangers next manager links to Marcelo Gallardo explained
As far as we understand it, the origin of Rangers being mentioned alongside ex-River boss Marcelo Gallardo is in a “potential candidate” type piece in the Daily Record.
For context, this list also includes ex-Chelsea manager Graham Potter – who has distanced himself from the job – and Steven Gerrard’s former Ibrox assistant Gary McAllister.
This story was then picked up by the Sky Sports live blog who claimed that Marcelo Gallardo is “in the frame” to be the next Rangers manager alongside Kevin Muscat and Pascal Jansen.
This was then picked up in Argentinian media, with TNT Sports Argentina quoting the Sky Sports link in a tweet about Marcelo Gallardo and Rangers.

Things would then go full circle when the Daily Record, who appear to be the source of the rumours, ran an update on the claims from Argentina!
In their live blog (02/10: 18:03), the Record claims TNT have branded Gallardo a “candidate” when the South American outlet is only quoting Sky Sports, who are only quoting the Record.
Whilst most Rangers fans will admit the links are majorly ambitious in any case, there appears little substance to those Marcelo Gallardo reports and as things stand, we’re not sure he’s in contention.
But that doesn’t mean we’re against reaching out…
