There is an “expectation” that Rangers will sign Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell this month as reports of a Blackburn Rovers bid are rebuffed in the Lancashire press.

Michael Beale is yet to make a signing as Ibrox manager and as we approach the halfway point in the January transfer window things are starting to get a bit antsy in the support.

Rangers’ transfer business over the last few seasons has been heavily scrutinised with the club falling behind Celtic in the title race and transfer market with an expectation that the situation changes this winter.

But as things stand Rangers are yet to complete any deals despite a multitude of reports with apparent Blackburn Rovers interest in Todd Cantwell having plenty nervous about a deal for the Norwich City star.

Talk of Blackburn bid for Todd Cantwell rebuffed

According to reports earlier in the week, a then unnamed Championship club reportedly had a bid rejected for Todd Cantwell amid simmering Rangers interest.

This would then be attributed to Norwich’s Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers, who reportedly held an interest in Cantwell back in the summer transfer window.

There were reports in the Sun that Norwich had a rebuffed a £1.5m Ewood Park bid for Todd Cantwell despite the fact the player is out of contract come the end of the season.

But now the Lancashire Telegraph – a local Blackburn newspaper – and journalist Rich Sharpe have refuted those claims and suggested Rangers are in pole position to sign the player.

They claim reports of a Blackburn bid are “wide of the mark” and added that there is an “expectation” Rangers will sign the player.

Todd Cantwell ‘expected’ to join Rangers

The report will come as a boost to those Rangers fans who’d feared competition for Todd Cantwell in this window from Blackburn.

The 24-year-old midfielder was once the stand-out of the Norwich City Academy and even scored six Premier League goals from midfield in the 19/20 season.

However over the last few seasons Cantwell has struggled for consistency with the yo-yo club and as his contract ticks down at Carrow Road perhaps Rangers can breathe new life into his career.

Ibrox manager Michael Beale is certainly a fan, and waxed lyrical about the player when asked about any interest following the 2-0 win over Dundee United.

“Todd was an excellent player when he was young and playing against my Liverpool Under 23s,” said Michael Beale [Rangers].

“I thought he would go on and have a fantastic career. He had that at the start and he is maybe just looking for a move to re-ingite it but I think he is a fantastic player at a good age.”

Meanwhile, one Rangers talent is rumoured to be nearing a Premiership rival loan switch.
