Rangers left-back Borna Barisic has claimed he’s in discussions over a new contract at Ibrox, just as one Gers-linked alternative in Thierry Small is linked to Spurs.

Borna Barisic, 30, has revealed in a recent interview that he’s in discussions over extending his Rangers deal, with the Croatian international out of contract next summer.

Having been at Rangers since 2018, the ex-NK Osijek captain has had an up-and-down stint in Glasgow over the last five years but he could be set to extend it.

The Ibrox full-back also says that he doesn’t listen to any chatter regarding his future, with Barisic extensively linked to the Rangers exit door last summer in particular.

“I have a contract with Rangers for one more year,” said Borna Barisic [Daily Record].

“I have started negotiations with the club. I don’t want to say anything because you never know in football. However, I have a great relationship with everyone at the club and we will find the best solution.

“There’s always speculation about my future. It reaches me – but little of it is true. I missed three games at the end of the season, I had a quadriceps injury, it wasn’t terrible, but we didn’t want to risk it. The last time I played it was for, about 25 minutes.”

Borna Barisic contract comments come amid Rangers doubts

Whilst there is much discussion surrounding a new contract, Borna Barisic was probably one of Rangers’ better performers last season, providing 13 assists and two goals in 43 appearances.

The contract comments come at an interesting time for Borna Barisic, who has once again been the subject of much discussion regarding his Rangers future.

With the emergence of Turkish international Ridvan Yilmaz, who could wind up costing Rangers £5m, the left-back is expected to be second choice next season.

There have also been links to the likes of Southampton left-back Thierry Small and Lausanne alternative Archie Brown, in reports which cast doubts over Barisic’s Rangers future.

However, amid reports that Spurs are to swoop in for Thierry Small despite the Rangers links, it appears that the Ibrox club are reassessing their position.

Having a fit, firing and confident Borna Barisic is undoubtedly an asset to Rangers as talk of a new contract rumbles and alongside Ridvan Yilmaz, the club is already well stocked in this position.
