As Rangers failed to qualify for the Champions League group stages in the summer, it dealt the Ibrox club an immense financial blow.
Qualification for Europe’s elite footballing competition is worth a reported £40m to each group stage competitor and these finances would’ve been transformational for the club.
As a result, Rangers entered the season after a budget summer and have felt the effects as Steven Gerrard jumped ship to Aston Villa and Celtic secured the title after heavy investment.
But fear not heading into the next campaign as managing director Stewart Robertson reveals the Gers have already offset this loss by qualifying for the Europa League Final.
Rangers Europa League Final run worth more than Champions League qualification
Speaking ahead of the showpiece event – which is reportedly worth £90m to Rangers in its own right should the Ibrox side win it – Robertson claimed this run has earned Rangers more than Champions League group stage football alone.
“The run we’ve had now is probably slightly more than we would have had from qualifying for the Champions League. It’s a terrific boost, it allows us to do so many things,” said Robertson [Heart & Hand].
“Beyond the money, it’s the profile. You look at the profile the players get and the ability to attract new players when you come to the summer.
“I think when you’re in a European Final it makes the club much more attractive.
“Financially it’s been a fantastic addition to what we budgeted for so that allows us to look at strengthening the team in the summer, it allows us to continue with the infrastructure projects we still have to do around the stadium and training ground.
“So it’s been a fantastic boost to the club’s finances.”
Somewhere in the distance you can hear the faint cries of Jon Dahl Tomasson and his legion of Celtic fans titter out into laughter from Ibrox.
Obsessed with the finances of Rangers, Celtic fans jumped on quotes by the ex-Malmo boss after the Danish coach dumped the Gers out of qualification.
Becoming something of a meme, the comments have now been made irrelevant as Rangers cash in on their magnificent run to the Europa League Final.
