Rangers are set to write to the SFA to demand answers as to why Alfredo Morelos’ goal was controversially ruled out by first Kevin Clancy and then VAR over the weekend.
The Gers had their faint title hopes extinguished in a 3-2 defeat at Celtic Park but things might’ve been quite different if the Colombian’s opening goal was allowed to stand in the game.
Morelos managed to force the ball home from a corner but the goal was disallowed after a pathetic collapse in the box from Alistair Johnston had Celtic’s preferred referee Kevin Clancy putting the whistle to his lips faster than most fans could blink.
Steven McLean in the VAR room then barely blinked himself before the game was allowed to restart and the moment was a pivotal one in the match.
At the very least the incident deserved a proper review and it is clear from the replays that Alistair Johnston makes a meal of things and Alfredo Morelos should’ve put Rangers in front.
Rangers write to SFA after Celtic VAR call
Now, Sky Sports claim that Rangers are set to write to the SFA to demand answers as to why the goal wasn’t allowed to stand and presumably why VAR didn’t properly review the decision.
Celtic have been – rather pathetically – applying pressure on the referees and VAR all season and the politicking continues to be a genuine drain on football games and in football coverage north of the border.
Michael Beale lamented the decision at full-time and also asked why Celtic’s second goal wasn’t ruled out for a handball from Jota before Kyogo Furuhashi scored.
Celtic would eventually win the game 3-2 to move 12 points clear in the Scottish Premiership title race with Rangers’ only hope of silverware now the Scottish Cup.
In order to lift it the Ibrox side will need to overcome their rivals at Hampden in three weeks’ time with the situation surrounding referees set to ramp up heading into the game.
