Rangers fans have once again been raising an eyebrow after Ibrox player/coach Jermain Defoe was on Sky Sports broadcasting duties as his teammates prepared for a match.
Ex-Spurs striker Defoe – who remains a hugely respected figure south of the border – was included on Sky Sports’ coverage of Man United’s win over his old club.

The Red Devils thumped Tottenham 3-0 in North London with Defoe on hand to provide analysis on the Premier League result.
The Gers had to directly respond to supporters last week after they’d questioned the inclusion of Defoe on Sky Sports’ coverage of West Ham v Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.
The veteran striker, 39, also provided analysis on Manchester United’s clash with Liverpool but it was the earlier kick off – which overlapped with Rangers’ 2-1 win over St Mirren – that had supporters confused.
Rangers star in second Sky Sports appearance
Fans were curious to know why a “key” first-team player and coach wasn’t with the team and backroom staff for a crunch game but was instead working on broadcasting duties.
Whilst Rangers weren’t clear as to precisely why Defoe has swapped the dugout for the press box, they were clear the entire thing is above board and has been sanctioned by the club.
🙌 Great to see one of our coaches on punditry duty today.

With Rangers set to play Motherwell at Fir Park this weekend, Defoe’s appearance on TV in London has once again had fans asking why the striker doesn’t appear to be part of the club’s preparations.
Whilst we can only speculate, perhaps the situation pertains to Defoe’s future where he is balancing potentially moving into coaching or punditry when he retires.
The striker’s contract at Ibrox expires come the end of the season.
A court case surrounding the striker also revealed that Defoe was at some stage self-isolating for Covid-19 reasons, and this may explain why the forward hasn’t been seen since the 1-0 defeat to Dundee United in August.
Whatever the case it’s clear the situation has been sanctioned by Rangers but with the Gers struggling for goals, plenty fans believe the club is missing the striker’s expertise and ability this season.
Defoe isn’t the only forward Rangers are missing this season as the Ibrox club struggle to score more than two goals in a game.
