As Rangers reportedly hone in on a move for former AS Monaco manager Philippe Clement, a move for the Ligue 1 side’s former sporting director Paul Mitchell could follow.

According to the Scottish Sun, there is a genuine possibility that Rangers could launch a move for the former EFL footballer who has been linked to top jobs with PSG and Manchester United.

Having worked with Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and even RB Leipzig, signing Paul Mitchell as sporting director or director of football would be considered a sizeable coup for Rangers.

The link is intensified by the suggestion that Rangers appear to have made Philippe Clement their top managerial target following the sacking of Michael Beale.

The Belgian coach was successful in the country’s Pro League with both KRC Genk and Club Brugge but was sacked after a year in charge of AS Monaco in the summer.

Paul Mitchell and Philippe Clement to reunite at Rangers

Four months before Philippe Clement’s exit, Paul Mitchell had announced plans to leave AS Monaco and did so at the end of last season with the two now lined up for a reunion at Rangers.

Speaking back then, Paul Mitchell claims that he wanted to return to the UK for family reasons and being based in Scotland might well appeal to the sporting director, who also has Premier League ambitions.

Both parties are also very familiar with each other, with Paul Mitchell having been interviewed by Rangers back in 2017 before the club eventually opted instead to move for ex-Manchester City man Mark Allen.

Having had substantial success with the Saints and Spurs in the Premier League, as well as RB Leipzig in Germany and AS Monaco in France, the talented recruitment guru boasts quite the C.V.

The Rangers board have come in for some fierce criticism for failing to have a suitable director of football in place this season and giving Michael Beale the reins over recruitment.

That Rangers could now go on to secure a highly-regarded European manager with a track record of success in Philippe Clement is one thing, but adding a talented sporting director in Paul Mitchell into the bundle would be quite the statement.
