Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney IS set to take over at Birmingham City after the sacking of Rangers-linked John Eustace.
That’s according to the Guardian, who report that England’s second all-time top goalscorer (53) is now set to take the reins at the Championship club.
It comes after Wayne Rooney left MLS side DC United earlier in the week and amid strong murmurs that a move to Birmingham and the English Championship was on the cards.
Rooney, 37, had failed to reach the MLS Playoffs for a second season on the bounce in the USA and the former Everton talent’s card was marked.
The report claims that the decision to sack John Eustace will “rankle” with Birmingham City fans who credit the former Watford and Stoke City midfielder with a recent resurgence.
The Guardian report also mentions those Rangers links to John Eustace, although the outgoing Birmingham manager is not expected to take over at Ibrox.

At this point, we’re surprised Wayne Rooney hasn’t been linked with the Rangers job given that every available manager and their dog, including the outgoing John Eustace, have earned a mention.
Rangers have sacked manager Michael Beale after a stuttering start to the season saw the club fall seven points behind in the Scottish Premiership after a failure to qualify for the Champions League.
The pressure is thoroughly on the Rangers hierarchy to get this appointment right and it’s highly unlikely John Eustace would placate frustrated supporters.
As Wayne Rooney prepares to take charge at Birmingham City, similarly a big English name hasn’t satisfied the support with reported moves for both Frank Lampard and Scott Parker also ruled out.
