A Greek transfer journalist is claiming that any Rangers interest in Panathinaikos captain Dimitrios Kourbelis could depend on the future of Ryan Jack.

Georgios Sideridis of Greek website Transfer Geeks also appeared to confirm Rangers’ interest in the 29-year-old but tempered those links with the claims around Ryan Jack.

Sideridis suggests that Rangers interest in Dimitrios Kourbelis hinges on the future of the Scotland international midfielder, who is out of contract in the summer.

This comes after Rangers were linked with Dimitrios Kourbelis earlier in the week, with the latest reports suggesting that both scouts from Ibrox and Celtic Park were in Greece this week.

That was to watch Panathinaikos against Olympiakos, with 30-times-capped Kourbelis one of three players subject to watching Ibrox eyes, the midfielder joined by teammate Fotis Ioannidis and Olympiacos ace Hwang In-Beom.

It’s not the first mention of Ryan Jack being central to any Dimitrios Kourbelis interest either, with Rangers News musing over this possibility earlier in the week.

But it is interesting that the suggestion has now being carried by a journalist in Greece and as Rangers links to the player intensify it has sparked an interesting debate.

Ryan Jack has spent the last few seasons of his Rangers career nursing niggling injury problems and fans have began to get frustrated with a lack of options across the squad.

But given the player’s senior role at the club, and the fact there are other, older options in the squad who are also out of contract this summer, the situation involving Jacko is an interesting one.

Not only is the midfielder an international quality player who can have an impact for a portion of the season, in the background of the club Jack’s influence as a standard setter is key.

The ex-Aberdeen captain also fills one of those much-talked about homegrown quota spots for European competition meaning if Rangers signed Dimitrios Kourbelis to replace him, they’d be losing one of these positions.

Meanwhile, ex-Rangers caretaker Graeme Murty has been linked with a new job.
