Rangers have announced Giovanni van Bronckhorst will become their new manager, taking over from Steven Gerrard.

With the Ibrox side sitting top of the league table and into the semi-finals of the League Cup, there appears – on the surface anyway – to be no major problems for the new manager to contend with.

However, this season has seen numerous key issues emerge and some have simply not been resolved. These could give GvB a major headache in the coming months.

The goalkeeper predicament

Allan McGregor has often been our saviour in the past, making vital saves and winning the side points on his own.

This season has been markedly different, though, with the keeper making his fair share of mistakes. His error against Hearts cost the side two precious points in the title race.

McGregor is approaching 40 and with his and Jon McLaughlin’s contracts expiring in the summer, van Bronckhorst has some major decisions on his hands. Robby McCrorie has played already this season, performing well against Celtic. Is he ready to become the new Rangers number 1? Or will GvB delve into the transfer market?

Defensive concerns

Comparing defensive records between this season and last season is like night and day. Rangers only conceded the first goal seven times last season, whereas we have already conceded the first goal eleven times in the current campaign, and we aren’t even in December yet.

With Connor Goldson out of contract at the end of the season and struggling to reach the heights of 2020/21, van Bronckhorst may be tempted to recoup a fee for the Englishman in January and look at other options. The side can’t afford to keep conceding first and fighting uphill battles.

With the club being linked with John Souttar and Danilho Doekhi recently, and with both out of contract in the summer, it might be time for GvB to act early and secure their signatures.

Front three dilemma

The wealth of talent the club now has in the attacking third is frightening. We aren’t solely relying on Morelos to score, with Roofe, Hagi, and Kent all chipping in with vital strikes last season and taking the burden off the young Colombian’s shoulders.

Fashion Sakala has been a breath of fresh air since his arrival in the summer and has played incredibly well recently.

As Gerrard was experimenting heavily with the front three and rotating more often than previously, the Ibrox side hasn’t really had a settled attacking trio this term.

Van Bronckhorst faces a mighty challenge trying to incorporate these talented individuals into an attacking force that will be reckoned with.

Although the club has done relatively well results-wise, these are key issues that need to be resolved soon to get performances back to the level that we saw last season.

The new manager has a challenge on his hands, that’s for sure.

Particularly as the Gers face a challenging run of games over the next month.
