Leading Scottish football journalist Chris Jack has claimed that Giovanni van Bronckhorst was not on the flight met by Rangers security officers at Glasgow airport.

Eagle-eyed Gers fans had spotted a private charter flight arriving in Glasgow from Amsterdam this afternoon with plenty – at the very least – suggesting it had something to do with the club’s manager search.

But whilst van Bronckhorst might not have been a passenger on the flight which arrived in Scotland today, it doesn’t mean that he wasn’t somehow connected to it.

As Jack explains in the Glasgow Times, Gio remains the frontrunner for the Ibrox job and is set to find out in the next 24 hours if he’ll be the man to take it on.

However, as for the plane, this was an Ibrox delegation who’d travelled to Holland as discussions continue over the job.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst remains favourite for Rangers job

This means that the plane which landed at Glasgow airport in fact contained members of the Rangers delegation who were negotiating over the vacant role.

Amongst them was sporting director Ross Wilson, who wanted to return to Glasgow early in the search as the club continue to muse over their next appointment.

According to Jack, Rangers and Ross Wilson look “to have turned” to Giovanni, 46, with the situation set to be resolved “sooner rather than later”.

Rangers will be well aware that the club faces a series of challenging matches on the horizon and the Gers hierarchy can look no sooner than the Premier Sports Cup semi-final against Hibs this weekend.

The Gers travel to Hampden knowing that a place in the tournament’s final is at stake and will know their potential opponent with St Johnstone and Celtic playing the day before.

Whoever the next manager is, he might also have to cope without a key player who has been sent home from international duty with an injury.
