Former Rangers manager Alex McLeish has praised Steven Gerrard, as quoted by Rangers.co.uk.

The 60-year-old, who won seven trophies during his stint at Ibrox, returned to the dugout on Saturday as a Gers Legends side faced off against Liverpool Legends.

He admitted that it was emotional to be back at a place where he achieved so much as a coach, but spoke highly of the man currently occupying the role, too.

“It was quite a thrilling feeling,” McLeish told Rangers.co.uk when asked about Steven Gerrard’s cameo in a Rangers shirt. “You can feel the buzz about the place and as soon as we came in here today, the fact that Rangers got to the top of the league last week has just made this the perfect day.”

“Steven has done a great job and he has done it with great humility as he had every right to come up here and be a big ego and a superstar.

“But he has been such a good signing for Rangers and his gravitas alone has transformed the club, while he has also shown he is learning as a coach very quickly.”

Verdict

This is high praise from a man who brought plenty of joy to Bears during his own time in charge.

He’s right, though. Gerrard’s appointment in May 2018 has been integral to Rangers’ return to competitiveness, and the reaction of the fans to his brief appearance in blue showed their appreciation for his efforts.

After the first few months of the season, the club is in a strong position, competing on three fronts and reportedly set to announce a highly regarded new Director of Football [Scottish Sun].

Gerrard knows that being well placed in October isn’t what it’s all about, though.

He will be judged on silverware and a lot of hard work still needs to be done before trophy-winning becomes reality.
