Livingston boss David Martindale has backed Rangers looking closer to home in the hunt for a new appointment – and a potential move for ex-Celtic defender Malky Mackay.
Lions boss Martindale mentioned both Ross County manager Malky Mackay and Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes as potential candidates in the Rangers managerial hunt.
According to David Martindale – himself once linked to the job at Ibrox – these are two of Scotland’s top managers as he suggested both could do a job in Govan.
“Derek (McInnes) and Malky (Mackay) are two top, top managers,” said David Martindale.
“I think anyone of those two could do a job at a club the size of Rangers or Celtic.
“I don’t get carried away with these foreign names that are so-called better coaches. There’s an abundance of managers within Scottish football and English football that could do a job.
“Sometimes we get it in our heads we have to look elsewhere for some fantastic skillset that someone has marketed well from foreign shores. I just namechecked two there. Derek is one of the best in the league and Malky is a top, top manager.”

Malky Mackay tipped for Rangers role
Whilst we’re certain neither of these choices would placate a frustrated Rangers support, there is an element of substance in what David Martindale is saying.
The Gers are struggling to regain the Ibrox identity which has made the club so successful with the club caught in the middle of two worlds at present.
But whilst Derek McInnes – a perhaps unpopular appointment for the Rangers manager’s job – might have been linked in the press, Malky Mackay hasn’t been mentioned.
Away from the fact that the Ross County manager hasn’t really done enough in his career to merit a stint at Rangers, Malky Mackay is also a former Celtic star.

Turning out for the Parkhead side for five years during the 1990s, Malky Mackay watched on as Rangers dominated Scottish football and something tells us that there would be uproar if he got his hands on the gig.
