Rangers simply don't need Charlie Adam in January

Not for the first time this season, Charlie Adam has expressed his interest in a move back to Rangers.
The 33-year-old is contracted until June, but is out of favour at Championship club, Stoke City.

In an interview with Sky Sports this afternoon, he stated that despite not yet receiving any contact from the club, he would be interested in a return to Ibrox.
“The Rangers thing is something that would interest me, absolutely”, he said.

Verdict

For me, though, he isn’t required at Rangers right now.
It appears that the Gers are in the process of securing the services of Steven Davis. That would be a major coup for Steven Gerrard and he must be the main priority.

If and when that deal is finalised, Rangers’ midfield will be bolstered. Having just turned 34 though, Davis is no spring chicken.
Energy is a vital ingredient in the middle of the park and something Ross McCrorie and Ryan Jack demonstrated in abundance on Saturday.
If the Stoke man were to join, we could be looking at a midfield trio of himself, Davis and Scott Arfield. Thats a combined age of 97.

Yes, Adam has buckets of experience. Yes, he knows what it takes to play at Ibrox.

However, Davis offers all of that too. There’s simply no need to bring in two players in the same position, for the same reasons.

More importantly, Davis is a superior player too. His 107 international caps to Adam’s 26, gives an indication of the gulf.
Clearly, Adam wants to play first team football. However, his inability to break into a mid-table Championship side this season, indicates his powers are on the wane.
For Steven Gerrard, this is surely one to avoid.
