Fan favourite in remarkable Rangers redemption after January exit links

Back in January, you’d be hard-pressed to find too many Rangers fans who’d bat an eyelid had John Lundstram left the club.

The midfielder had struggled to settle into a lacklustre Ibrox team who’d struggled to reach anything like top form all season long.

But fast forward three months and suddenly the ex-Sheffield United midfielder is not only one of the most important players in the team; he’s a firm fan favourite.

Whether fans are singing about John Lundstram being on the ball or being the best on Earth, it’s the Scouser’s name that is most prominently on the Rangers support’s lips.

Linked to Championship Middlesbrough in the winter window, Lundstram has gone from potential cold nights away to Stoke to bossing midfields in Dortmund, Braga and Hampden.

Deservedly named Man of the Match in the clash with Celtic – with Calvin Bassey his biggest rival to the title – Rangers fans have that midfield warrior that they’ve called out for over the last few seasons.

A committed battler who loves a tackle and who can also pick a pass, has composure and control in the middle, and who can shoot from range too, John Lundstram is a Rangers all-rounder and one of the club’s greatest redemption stories of the last few years.

Speaking after the game, Scouse John explained how much the result means to him personally and his celebrations with the fans at full-time summed this up perfectly.

Now a mainstay in that Rangers midfield, credit must go to Giovanni van Bronckhorst for finding a way to get the best out of Lundstram.

Rangers will now focus on getting the most out of this season with Scottish Cup and Europa League glory within their grasp and the Scottish Premiership not yet decided.

After coming back from the brink, if the Gers are to have any success this season, then expect John Lundstram to be right at the heart of it.

Meanwhile, one salty ex-Celtic star has spent his Easter Sunday thoroughly embarrassing himself.
