It might never have happened for former Rangers youngster Malcolm Ebiowei at Ibrox, but at Derby County he’s been earning the praise from one of football’s greatest ever players.

Derby boss Wayne Rooney has been waxing lyrical about the former Gers kid and the Man United and England legend has branded the 18-year-old midfielder “incredible”.

Formerly of Arsenal’s youth Academy, Malcolm Ebiowei joined the Ibrox youth academy in 2020 but within a year was back in England plying his trade for Derby County.

It’s proven to be the right move for the youngster who has broken into Rooney’s cash-strapped side this season, making nine appearances for the top team.

Also making seven appearances in Premier League 2, the fact Malcolm Ebiowei has scored seven goals at that level this season also speaks volumes for his ability.

Ex-Rangers kid Malcolm Ebiowei lauded by Wayne Rooney

Speaking after the 1-1 draw with Coventry City, Wayne Rooney branded Malcolm Ebiowei “the best player on the pitch” and gave Rangers fans a taste of what they’re missing.

“He has got an enormous amount of ability,” said Rooney [Athletic].

“He’s brave; he’s not afraid to take players on, get tackled, and make mistakes.

“I thought he was excellent all game.

“He was the best player on the pitch.

“It is one of the best performances I have seen from a young player consistently for 90 minutes in a long time, and he deserves that because he’s worked so hard.

“His attitude is incredible, and he’s an exciting young player.

“I know it means a lot to him.”

The emergence of Malcolm Ebiowei comes at a challenging time for Derby as the club’s administration and subsequent docked points see them all but destined for Championship relegation.

Despite a valiant effort this season, the Rams currently sit 24th in the division, nine points from safety with only six games to play.

Whilst Malcolm Ebiowei may well prove the one that got away for Rangers, there’s a “special” talent in the club’s camp that the Gers simply must tie down.
