Where once Rangers-linked Fabian Angel and Andres Cordoba are now

Two seasons ago, Rangers looked to take advantage of new work permit regulations with Colombian midfield pair Fabian Angel and Andres Cordoba watched by Ross Wilson.

Midfield was an area that needed fresh legs that summer, Joey Veerman was linked, along with several others, but John Lundstram was the only new addition to the engine room.

The paths that the Rangers-linked pair of Fabian Angel and Andres Cordoba have taken suggests that one of them should still be under consideration.

Rangers and the curious case of Fabian Angel and Andres Cordoba

Originally in 2021, South America-based football journalist, now a regional director for the International Sports Consultancy agency, Simon Edwards, revealed that Rangers had been in touch about Angel.

The 22-year old former Colombian youth cap seemed the more impressive of the two and last summer saw a dream loan move to Newell’s Old Boys get completed.

After making just two appearances for Lionel Messi’s former club though, the midfield enforcer suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury from which he is yet to fully recovery.

They have an option to buy but after such a serious injury, that is highly unlikely.

Cordoba’s career has taken an altogether different path completely.

The 6ft 3inch tall powerhouse has been on loan almost every season since Rangers were linked but now finds himself at Partizan Belgrade until December 2023 – after that, his future isn’t clear.

Capable of playing as a defensive midfielder or of dropping into the heart of defence, on paper, he is exactly the type of player that Rangers engine room is missing.

Earning his first international cap in January, scoring in the process, Cordoba could be an interesting addition.

Cordoba is the player that Edwards recommended to the club after Ross Wilson enquired about Fabian Angel.

It looks like he has an eye for a player.

With both of their futures uncertain beyond this year, who knows, we might not be without a Colombian in the team for as long as we might have thought.
