The Technical Director of FC Utrecht has suggested that Sam Lammers had multiple options before securing a loan switch to the Eredivisie side from Rangers.

The Dutch club have announced the loan signing of the Ibrox forward just six months on from when the hitman joined Michael Beale’s squad at Rangers.

In what is one of the most poorly considered moves of the 21st century from a Rangers perspective, the Ibrox club forked out £3.5m to sign the forward from Atalanta.

FC Utrecht win Sam Lammers race

Now moving back the Eredivisie, the Dutch club’s Technical Director has hinted to Utrecht’s official website that Sam Lammers had a number of transfer options of the table.

Also branded a number 10 by outgoing Rangers manager Michael Beale, Utrecht director Jordy Zuidam has suggested the Dutch club view the forward more as an out-and-out-striker.

This would also explain the club’s decision to hand Sam Lammers the number 9 shirt at the club.

“We welcome a driven striker in Sam,” said Jordy Zuidam. “He has specific qualities that we can use within the team.

“He knows the Eredivisie well, has gained experience abroad in recent years and can be deployed immediately. We are happy that Sam chose us and we can count on him for the rest of this season.”

Rangers striker transfer an expensive mistake

Having got Sam Lammers off the wage bill for one season at least, Rangers’ transfer budget has taken a battering with several heavily criticised signings in the summer.

Lammers is just one of three new forwards alongside Cyriel Dessers and Danilo who have quite simply not contributed anywhere near as much as the some £14m outlay demanded.

What’s more the Ibrox club also have the stuttering Dutch forward – who is still only 26 – on their books for the next three-and-a-half years.

Letting Sam Lammers move to Utrecht is a clear admission of failure on the part of the club’s recruitment and it follows a disastrous six months at the club.

Playing 31 times and only scoring twice, Michael Beale must’ve had some ego to think he could press the Dutchman into a diamond amid the pressure of life at Ibrox.

According to leading Rangers insiders Heart & Hand, the Ibrox club have already named their price to permanently sign the striker.
