Tottenham legend thinks former club should sign Rangers striker Defoe

Speaking on Love Sport Radio, Tottenham legend Gary Mabbutt has suggested that his former club re-sign Rangers loanee, Jermain Defoe, as cover for their injured talisman, Harry Kane.

£135m-rated England captain [Transfermarkt], Kane, is set to be on the sidelines for several months due to a bad hamstring injury, and speculation is rife as to who the club will recruit as a replacement, with no other out-and-out centre forwards in their current first-team squad.

Ex-England international and former Spurs defender Mabbott thinks bringing in a familiar face would be a better option than digging deep in the transfer market.

“You can’t just go into a panic buy just because your star player is going to be out for two or three months, because when that player comes back the competition is going to be even greater,” he said, as quoted by LoveSportRadio.com. “The player coming in may not want that.”

“Ideally you’d bring back in Jermaine Defoe on loan just to cover that area.”

Verdict

Defoe, of course, has a long history with Spurs, playing over 250 league matches for the club across three spells.

However, this was a pretty wild suggestion, even before a report emerged claiming that the club had agreed a £28m fee with AC Milan for Polish international striker Krzysztof Piatek [The Sun].

Defoe’s future may be, to an extent, out of Rangers’ hands, considering he’s still technically a Bournemouth player.

Yet, while football romantics would have enjoyed it, there was never any real chance that his former side would come in for him.

Given the amount of money at stake with regards to qualification for European football, there’s simply no way that Tottenham would refrain from making a big signing, just to bring in a veteran who is a firm second-choice at Rangers.

Bears can be safe in the knowledge that the 37-year-old won’t be heading back down south any time soon.
