Rangers talent Tony Weston is being linked with a loan switch to Cove Rangers just weeks after retuning to Ibrox from Partick Thistle.
The 19-year-old ex-Blackpool striker impressed with the club’s B Team last season and was farmed out to Firhill in the summer with big expectations on the youngster’s shoulders.
But with gametime limited largely to substitute appearances, Rangers recalled Tony Weston earlier in January and already the player is being linked another short-term exit.
According to the Daily Record Live Transfers Blog [18/01/22 7:53], Paul Hartley’s side are considering a move for the striker as they look to fend off a Championship relegation battle.
If the links are substantiated in the weeks to come, Rangers fans will be hoping that Tony Weston gets more of an opportunity at Cove than he did with the Jags as the player looks to continue his development.
Tony Weston linked with Cove Rangers switch
Tony Weston made 18 appearances for Partick Thistle but 17 of those came from the bench, with Weston’s only goal for the club coming in the 3-0 Scottish Cup win over Kelty Hearts.
Despite this, Partick Thistle manager Ian McCall expressed his disappointment the striker had chosen to leave Firhill and praised the kid’s talent.
“Tony is a very talented young player and I’m disappointed to see him leave,” said McCall [PTFC].
“Admittedly, he probably hasn’t has as many opportunities as he’s deserved this season and for a player at his age, it’s important to be playing.
“We left it up to him because we’d have been happy to keep a hold of him but he’s decided to leave and look for regular football elsewhere. As well as being a good player, he’s a great lad who is well-liked here at Firhill and we all wish him the best going forward.”
Rangers signed Tony Weston from Blackpool after the youngster had broken through at Bloomfield Road as a teenager, paying a reported £250k in the process [Glasgow Times].
Highly-rated south of the border, the switch was considered something of a coup for the Gers and last season the striker impressed in the club’s revamped B Team set-up.
If Cove Rangers is the player’s next destination, Gers fans will have one eye on the progress of Tony Weston as he looks to make the grade at Ibrox.
Meanwhile, Michael Beale has been talking about interest in homegrown Scottish players.
