Three Rangers players likely to leave club in the summer – report

The Daily Mail reports that three Rangers players are likely to be moved on in the summer as part of an overhaul of Steven Gerrard’s current squad.

The Gers have imploded domestically since the winter break, and while the report claims that senior players in the team will also now be under pressure, it’s suggested that three players currently on the fringes of the first-team squad will be the first casualties come the end of the season.

They are Jordan Jones, Brandon Barker and Jon Flanagan.

Jones

Jones got off to a relatively promising start to life at Ibrox after joining from Kilmarnock in the summer. He starred in the away leg of the Europa League qualifying win in Midtjylland, before providing the assist for Alfredo Morelos’ last-minute winner against Legia Warsaw.

However, it appears that when he recklessly lunged in on Moritz Bauer in September’s Old Firm defeat, he more or less sealed his own fate.

After several months on the sidelines, he returned to fitness around Christmas but has only made three further appearances.

Barker

Barker was another of the fleet of wingers signed during the summer, joining from Manchester City on a three-year deal.

However, at no time has he really looked like the first choice in his position.

Currently behind Ryan Kent, Sheyi Ojo and possibly even Jones in the pecking order, the 22-year-old hasn’t been able to make the impact he would have hoped for.

His 11 appearances in all competitions have yielded a solitary goal and no assists, and he’s only been seen once in 2020.

Flanagan

The ex-Liverpool full-back and former teammate of Steven Gerrard arrived in the summer of 2018 on a two-year deal.

Yet, other than a productive spell towards the back end of last season, he hasn’t been able to establish himself in the Gers team.

His opportunities have come largely as a result of injuries to others, but recent performances haven’t been up to scratch.

Filling in at left-back at Aberdeen in December, Flanagan’s error cost a goal and two points, while his limitations going forward were exposed when deputising for James Tavernier after the turn of the year.
