The ex-Rangers star who could help sell Ibrox move to James Sands

As Rangers are linked to USA international James Sands, perhaps an ex-Ibrox star turned New York City FC teammate in Gedion Zelalem can sell the move to the defender.

The 21-year-old centre-back played a big role in the side who lifted the MLS Cup this season and during the competition’s off season he’s been linked with a move to Rangers.

Already capped seven times by the USA national team, reports coming out of Italy suggest Rangers are eyeing a loan move for the player.

Rangers have had issues with depth at centre-back this season, the emergence of Calvin Bassey helped to stave off issues to Filip Helander and Leon Balogun.

Defender Jack Simpson – who appears frozen out of the side under Giovanni van Bronckhorst – also hasn’t been trusted and is now being linked with moves out of the club.

But when it comes to recommending Ibrox Stadium and Rangers as a potential destination, James Sands won’t need to look much further than across the dressing room to Gedion Zelalem.

The now 24-year-old Germany-born USA international spent a season on loan at Rangers in 15/16, signed from Premier League Arsenal during Mark Warburton’s time in charge.

Once touted for the big time in the beautiful game, things didn’t quite work out as planned for Gedion Zelalem after his spell at Rangers and he now finds himself at New York City.

Interestingly, the midfielder was signed by ex-Celtic boss Ronny Deila.

Gedion Zelalem’s greatest moment in a Rangers shirt came in scoring a penalty after that 2-2 Scottish Cup semi-final Old Firm in 2016 – something which ultimately cost Deila his job at Parkhead.

Rangers have a rich history of USA players – nine in total have turned out at Ibrox with Zelalem the 8th behind Matt Polster – and James Sands could be the next name to adorn the star spangled banner in Glasgow.

Whilst Gedion Zelalam spent time at the club during a difficult period, if the defender is looking for recommendations then he need look no further than the ex-Rangers midfielder.

James Sands isn’t the only player being linked to Rangers this window either, with the Gers said to be one of two clubs leading the hunt for a Serie A talent.
