Sunderland fans have reacted to the news that former Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty has signed for the club.

32-year-old Lafferty has penned a short-term deal with the EFL League One outfit which runs until the end of the 2019/20 season.

“I’m pleased to welcome Kyle to the club and I’m really looking forward to working with him,” manager Phil Parkinson told safc.com.

“He’s an experienced striker who provides us with another option in the final third. He adds competition for places at the top end of the pitch, which is something I felt we needed.”

Lafferty had been a free agent following a brief but eventful stint in Norway with Sarpsborg, who he helped avoid Eliteserien relegation on the final day of the season.

His move to Scandinavia came after the mutual termination of his second spell at Rangers in July 2019.

The Northern Ireland international scored over 30 league goals during his first stint at Ibrox between 2008 and 2012, winning five major domestic trophies. However, despite a promising start to his return under Steven Gerrard six years later, he ultimately flattered to deceive.

Having scored just six times during that Gers spell and once during his time in Norway, he’ll be hoping to rediscover his finishing prowess with Sunderland, who are targeting promotion.

In general, the signing appears to have gone down well with Black Cats supporters, who were clearly keen to see their side recruit another striker.
