Rangers striker talent Tony Weston is set to return to Ibrox after his loan deal with Partick Thistle was cut short in January.
The Rangers B team striker was farmed out on loan to our Glasgow rivals with the intention of getting first-team experience and helping the Jags out of the Scottish Championship.
But things haven’t completely gone to plan for young Tony Weston this season with the striker largely confined to substitute appearances with Ian McCall’s team.
The 19-year-old striker has made 18 appearances for Partick Thistle but 17 of those have come from the bench, with Weston’s only goal for the club coming in the 3-0 Scottish Cup win over Kelty Hearts.
Tony Weston returns to Rangers
Speaking after Tony Weston returned to Rangers, Partick Thistle manager Ian McCall expressed his disappointment the striker had chosen to leave Firhill and praised the kid’s talent.
“Tony is a very talented young player and I’m disappointed to see him leave,” said McCall [PTFC].
“Admittedly, he probably hasn’t has as many opportunities as he’s deserved this season and for a player at his age, it’s important to be playing.
“We left it up to him because we’d have been happy to keep a hold of him but he’s decided to leave and look for regular football elsewhere. As well as being a good player, he’s a great lad who is well-liked here at Firhill and we all wish him the best going forward.”
Rangers signed Tony Weston from Blackpool after the youngster had broken through at Bloomfield Road as a teenager, paying a reported £250k in the process [Glasgow Times].
Highly-rated south of the border, the switch was considered something of a coup for the Gers and last season the striker impressed in the club’s revamped B Team set-up.
The switch to Partick Thistle hasn’t worked out as planned but now Rangers will be looking at the next move for Tony Weston, who needs to get more first-team games under his belt.
