Steven Gerrard has clarified Rangers’ transfer ambitions with the window primed to slam shut at midnight on Monday, as quoted by the Daily Record.

The Gers have been relatively busy over recent months, bringing in Jon McLaughlin, Calvin Bassey, Leon Balogun, Ianis Hagi, Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten.

However, Gerrard has consistently spoken of the need for reinforcements in the middle of the park and with deadline day looming large, no midfielder has yet arrived.

He’s still hopeful a new face will arrive over the next few days, but if completed, it’s likely to be a solitary signing.

“Does qualifying give us more flexibility ahead of the deadline on Monday? It’s a difficult question to answer, probably better suited to other people above me at this football club,” said the Gers boss, as quoted by the Daily Record. “The board, myself and Ross are still trying to add the person in the position we feel we need before the window shuts.”

“But we’ll have to see how the next three days pan out in terms of ins and outs. It’s difficult to control because you never know what’s going to land on your desk and whether you are able to get someone over the line when you are trying to make it happen.

“There certainly won’t be (multiple) additions. If we do well in the next couple of days there might be an addition.”

Steven Gerrard gives Rangers transfer update – Verdict

Rangers pulled off the signing of Ryan Kent on deadline day last summer and it looks as though work will be being done right up until the last minute this time around, too.

There’s no doubt the Gers are in a better position than they were at the start of the window. A significant number of fringe players have left the club for new challenges, while each new arrival has made a contribution to a strong start to the season.

However, the recent injuries to Ryan Jack and Joe Aribo exposed a lack of depth in midfield, while supporters have been crying out for a box-to-box type player for some time.

If Gerrard can hold on to his star men and bring in a dynamic match-fit midfielder by midnight on Monday, this will go down as a highly successful window.
