Rangers previously missed out on signing Joey Veerman and Steven Gerrard has now failed to bring him to Al-Ettifaq.

Rangers fans will be well aware of some of the players to slip through the net in recent years.

Danilho Doekhi and Terem Moffi spring to mind and both of those players are now shining in major European leagues.

Joey Veerman’s name stands out though after Rangers attempted to lure him to Ibrox from Heerenveen back in 2021.

Rangers were keen to sign Veerman from Heerenveen and allegedly offered £4million to sign the midfielder under Steven Gerrard.

The Athletic claim that Rangers did want Veerman but didn’t even make an official bid because there was a real belief that Heerenveen would demand a high asking price.

Veerman moved to PSV Eindhoven instead and whilst Gerrard is no longer at Rangers, his interest in the Dutchman remains…

Gerrard is now in charge of Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq, attempting to rebuild his reputation after a disappointing spell in charge of Aston Villa.

Gerrard lost a key midfielder in January as Jordan Henderson moved on to Ajax and he seemingly fancied landing Veerman as a replacement.

Agent Nathan van Kooperen has told ESPN that both Al-Ettifaq and Zenit St Petersburg made bids to sign Veerman in January.

No deal was done though and Van Kooperen went on to say that Veerman wants to sign a new contract with PSV despite having dreams of taking another step in his career.

Heading to Saudi Arabia seemingly isn’t in Veerman’s plans right now, especially as he looks to nail down a spot in the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024.

Gerrard may well have been the driving force in Rangers’ interest in signing Veerman, given that he has now targeted him once again in Saudi Arabia.

The outcome is the same though, with Gerrard again missing out on Veerman – and it may be time for him to give up on this particular pursuit.
