As quoted by the Chronicle, Steve Bruce has provided a major transfer boost for Rangers, by denying interest in James Tavernier.
It was reported earlier this month that the newly appointed Newcastle boss had made the Gers skipper a priority transfer target [Daily Mail]. Tavernier has a history in the Toon, having been on the club’s books from 2008 until 2014.

However, he never quite managed to break through in that time and it doesn’t look like he’s heading back, either.
“I really don’t know where that came from and I hate it when people talk about my players so I’m not going to comment on anybody else’s,” Bruce said on Tav, as quoted by the Chronicle.
Rangers star James Tavernier not on Newcastle’s radar
This is a significant boost for the Gers, as the lure of a shot back in the Premier League with his old club, may have been appealing to Gerrard’s skipper.

Newcastle aren’t the only top-flight English side to be linked with the right-back, though.
Back in May, Brighton, Southampton and Burnley were all credited with an interest [Daily Mail]. With the 8th August Premier League and Championship transfer deadline drawing ever nearer, though, Bears will be optimistic that the 27-year-old will stay put.
Tavernier was outstanding last season, improving defensively and directly contributing to 28 goals in the SPL alone. It would be understandable if there were late moves for his signature, but it’s important the Gers hold on to one of their biggest assets.
As the SPL season kicks off on Sunday at Kilmarnock, any big departures now would prove very disruptive. Tav is a driving force in this Gers side, and Gerrard needs him ahead of his push for the title.
