Should Rangers offload Wes Foderingham to fund January buys?

Formerly an ever-present between the sticks for Rangers, Wes Foderingham has had a change in fortunes this season.

The return of Allan McGregor immediately shunted him down to second choice in the pecking order.

You might expect that at some stage McGregor would have experienced a spell of poor form, opening the door once again for the Englishman.

However, that hasn’t materialised. The Scotland no.1 has been supreme all season, limiting Foderingham to just three appearances in all competitions.

Surely, despite fantastic recent developments in his personal life, he is becoming frustrated with his situation.

I’m sure he doesn’t dispute McGregor’s form, but as a professional, it must be difficult not to feature.

Should Rangers let him go?

First of all, he has been an excellent servant to the club across four seasons. Therefore, he shouldn’t be forced out.

The current situation offers little to either party, though. The ‘keeper is getting next to no playing time, yet is still on the wage bill.

At 20, Robby McCrorie could serve as back-up keeper while continuing to turn out occasionally for the development team. Jak Alnwick is also scheduled to return soon.

The key for Rangers is strengthening in attacking areas next month. Foderingham is valued at £600k and his sale could help to fund a move for key transfer targets.

There will be clubs out there next month, desperate to improve shoddy defensive records. A proven goalkeeper such as Wes will be desirable, and Leeds United have already reportedly shown interest.

Rangers should definitely be open to offers in January, especially due to the need to strengthen elsewhere.
