Sheffield United have smashed their transfer record to sign Rangers linked striker Rhian Brewster from Liverpool.
In June, the Scottish Sun reported that Steven Gerrard would try to land the highly-rated forward on a temporary deal for the 2020/21 season.
However, when it became clear that Liverpool were looking to sell the England youth international rather than send him out on loan again, the Gers didn’t stand a chance.
Crystal Palace and Aston Villa have also been linked with interest [Alan Nixon] but Sheffield United won the race in the end, announcing Brewster’s arrival on a five-year deal on Friday evening.
The Blades confirmed on Twitter that the fee paid to Liverpool ‘smashed’ their transfer record, which had last been broken in August with the signing of Aaron Ramsdale from Bournemouth for £18.5m [BBC Sport].
Paul Joyce of the Times reported earlier on Friday that Brewster had commanded a £23.5m fee, with Liverpool inserting a buy-back guarantee and a sell-on clause.
“At the top of the pitch we have one of the country’s hottest properties from Liverpool and for him to sign permanently here is fantastic for everyone concerned,” Sheffield United manager, Chris Wilder, told sufc.co.uk.
“There has been a lot of interest in him over the summer, a lot of speculation about who we were going for, but he has been our number one target and I am delighted to have secured his services.”
Brewster will play alongside former Gers stars John Fleck and Wes Foderingham at Bramall Lane, with the latter signing for the English top-flight club on a free transfer in June.
