Serie A champions could do Rangers Champions League favour

Rangers will face a repeat of last season’s Champions League play-off tie with PSV Eindhoven and, if they are lucky, might be doing so without Johan Bakayoko in opposition.

Servette capitalised on tactics that saw James Tavernier and Borna Barisic isolated on too many occasions and this is where the Dutch outfit’s strengths lie too.

However, Rangers fans will be hoping that a report from journalist Sacha Tavolieri on X proves to be accurate with Napoli closing in on Johan Bakayoko.

Rangers could get PSV transfer bonus if Johan Bakayoko departs

Playing on PSV’s right-hand side, the 20-year old Belgium international would be one of Peter Bosz’s main threats.

Barisic is one of Michael Beale’s main attacking outlets but, if he is looking over his shoulder when he goes forwards, Rangers could be restricted for width down the left-hand side.

Tavolieri has some good news but the clock will be ticking with less than a week until the two sides meet again:

“It’s confirmed for Johan Bakayoko!

“Napoli have reaffirmed their intention to position themselves with an offer made to #PSV Eindhoven once the departure of Hirving Lozano has been confirmed.

“As explained on August 10, discussions are currently underway with two other Premier League clubs.”

Rangers were given a torrid time down both flanks against Servette in the first half.

Michael Beale made tactical adjustments at half-time and Rangers were able to get on top but a player of Johan Bakayoko’s ability could cause problems even if he isn’t afforded the same space to operate in.

The goals that have been lost this season so far have almost all been preventable.

Against Servette, it is the first time that Jack Butland has had to really earn his money with the defence being opened up at will.

It will take a repeat performance from the Rangers keeper against PSV but fingers crossed that John Bakayoko has already made his move.
