Scotland boss Steve Clarke reserved praise for Angus Gunn after the Rangers transfer target had a ‘clean’ debut against Cyprus. The goalkeeper kept a clean sheet in Saturday’s 3-0 win.

The Tartan Army hosted Cyprus at Hampden Park in their opening qualifying fixture for Euro 2024. Goals from John McGinn (21’) and Scott McTominay (87’, 90’+3) secured Scotland the points, while Gunn kept the visitors at bay. But, in truth, the shot-stopper was rarely tested.

Grigoris Kastanos forced Gunn to make an early save before substitute Andronikos Kakoullis later tested the Norwich City goalie. The 27-year-old also left Clarke sweating for a second in the 33rd minute after slipping. But Gunn quickly regained his composure to secure the ball.

Angus Gunn makes his Scotland debut amid transfer interest from Rangers

Clarke opted to give Gunn his Scotland debut against Cyprus having declared his allegiances ahead of the Euro 2024 qualifier. The goalkeeper had previously represented England at the junior levels and made one senior squad in 2017. But he never featured for the Three Lions.

Gunn’s decision to represent Scotland could also come in a year the Norwich star secures a transfer to Rangers. According to Dean Jones, Ibrox chiefs believe the goalkeeper can reach an ever higher level in Glasgow. The Scottish Sun also reports a £3m price tag for the goalie.

Rangers boss Michael Beale is exploring Gunn’s transfer from Norwich as the Ibrox natives target a potential new No1. The Norwich-born stopper has piqued the Gers’ interest having kept five clean sheets across 22 Championship appearances this term to 23 goals conceded.

Steve Clarke reserves praise for the Norwich City star’s display vs Cyprus

While Cyprus struggled to test Gunn, Scotland boss Clarke reserved praise for the Rangers transfer target’s performance on his debut. The 27-year-old could face a sterner challenge next Tuesday if the goalkeeper also starts the Tartan Army’s Euro 2024 qualifier with Spain.

“I just felt it was a good game for Angus to come in,” Clarke told BBC Sportsound. “I thought he did well [and] his handling was good. He didn’t have a lot to do or big saves to make. Everything he did was clean – apart from that slip that made everyone a little nervous.”
