Rangers’ most audacious dealing this month, saw them secure the signing of Jermain Defoe.
It may be a loan, but the England international is a Ger, at least until the end of the season.
However, with such a prolific striker frozen out at his previous club, the Gers weren’t the only club linked with a move.
Crystal Palace had also been mooted as a potential destination. The Eagles average less than a goal a game this season, and are heavily reliant on Wilfried Zaha.
Yet, this afternoon, Roy Hodgson was at great pains to stress otherwise.
“We had no interest. I saw his name mentioned in relation to the club.”
“But it’s one thing people relating their players to our club and another thing our club initiating moves to sign a player”, Hodgson told Sky Sports.
The ex-England boss wasn’t finished there, though.
“I can state categorically we made no move at all to sign Jermain Defoe…we were never one of the candidates for his signature.”
Well that certainly clears it up, in case anyone was left in doubt by the initial comments.
There’s no question that even if Crystal Palace weren’t in the running, others were.
Rangers did well to snap up a quality, proven goal scorer.
They don’t come around often.
