In an interview with BBC Radio Sheffield, Paul Warne has suggested Rangers have the ability to recall Jake Hastie in January.

The Rotherham manager was asked about the terms of the young winger’s loan deal, after his blistering start to life in EFL League One.

The 20-year-old has three goals in his first three appearances, including a strike at the Stadium of Light against Sunderland on Tuesday night.

Rotherham manager suggests Rangers could bring back Hastie

After referring the youngster as a ‘dream’ player who has been ‘influential in all the games’, he admitted that he couldn’t guarantee he’d remain at New York Stadium for the whole campaign.

“With all season-long loans, they all have breaks in them,” Warne told BBC Radio Sheffield. “There’s always a window of opportunity.”

“You get led by the parent club well in advance of the window opening and then you get guarantees nearer it.

“I won’t lose sleep over Jake or any of the lads. If they perform really well and they move on, then they’ve done a good job for us.”

Verdict

It’s a little early to be discussing the merits of a potential recall for Hastie, but we now know a return in January is very much possible.

The ex-Motherwell wide man couldn’t have got off to a better start in England, and there’s no doubt Gerrard will be monitoring his progress carefully.

As a young player, it’s crucial he’s getting minutes and it seems he’s now one of the first names on the teamsheet under Warne.

The Millers take on Shrewsbury Town at home tomorrow and it’s a chance for the player to add to his already impressive goal tally.
