Rangers wanted Djordje Petrovic under Steven Gerrard and Ross Wilson is now trying to take him to Nottingham Forest.
Rangers’ stance on goalkeepers has been a little curious in recent years.
Allan McGregor was allowed to head into his 40’s without a clear succession plan being in place.
Jon McLaughlin was never going to be the long-term answer and Robby McCrorie has found first-team opportunities rare.
Rangers fans were left puzzled as to why Rangers never appeared to have a clear successor in-house for when McGregor moved on.
It doesn’t matter too much now; Rangers have found their new first-choice stopper in Jack Butland, bringing him to Ibrox this summer.
Rangers did though look into young goalkeepers during McGregor’s time at the club with Petrovic a target.
FootMercato reported in 2020 that Rangers were battling Nice, Paris FC, Getafe, Anderlecht and KV Mechelen in the race to sign Petrovic from Serbian side Cukaricki.
Petrovic ended up staying at Cukaricki before heading off to MLS side New England Revolution last year.
The 23-year-old replaced Matt Turner after his move to Arsenal and it looks like Petrovic could land a big move of his own.
Ross Wilson’s Nottingham Forest move for ex-Rangers target Djordje Petrovic
Ross Wilson was leading Rangers’ transfer business at the time of the Petrovic interest and it seems the Scot hasn’t forgotten about him.
The Athletic claim that Wilson’s new club Nottingham Forest have launched a bid for Petrovic.
However, New England Revolution have rejected offers from both Forest and Nantes, believed to be worth around $8million (£6.25million).
The Athletic’s Tom Bogert adds that Petrovic has now skipped training as he is ‘upset’ that the offers have been rejected.
The Serbia international is attempting to force an exit this summer but Wilson and Forest will seemingly have to go higher yet.
Petrovic may only be viewed as competition at Forest given their interest in Dean Henderson but Wilson is seemingly reigniting an old Rangers pursuit anyway.
