The Sunday Post reports that Roma are ‘willing to dig deep’ to land Rangers star Borna Barisic this month.

Earlier in the week, Steven Gerrard confirmed that the Italian giants had expressed an interest in the full-back, before stressing that he is a player the Gers ‘need 100 per cent’ and have ‘no ambition’ to move on [Glasgow Times].

Yet, this latest Sunday Post report claims that the Rangers boss’ comments haven’t been enough to deter the Serie A side.

It’s claimed that they are ‘anxious’ to strengthen their squad as they mount a bid for a Champions League qualification spot, and they are prepared to wait until late in the January window if need be.

Roma finished sixth in the table last season and as a result, are currently competing in the Europa League. They will face Gent in the Round of 32 next month.

This latest report doesn’t provide an amount that Roma are willing to offer, but it would have to be a monumental fee if Rangers were to part with a player as important as Barisic.

Since being brought into the starting XI for the Europa League clash against Feyenoord at Ibrox in September, he’s been a near ever-present at left-back and the threat he provides in attack is crucial to the way the team plays.

A huge fan favourite, there would be uproar if the club accepted an offer for him just as the bid for a 55th top-flight title was finally taking shape.

The deeper into the window we go, though, the less likely the Gers hierarchy would be tempted, no matter how astronomical the fee, as there would be minimal time remaining within which to recruit a replacement.
