Rangers full-back Borna Barisic wants to stay at Ibrox despite reported interest from the English Premier League, according to claims down south.

In links widely attributed to the Daily Star, it’s said Barisic, 29, has renewed optimism about the situation at Rangers ever since the appointment of Dutch coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The story has also been carried by the likes of the Glasgow Times.

Rangers have looked a team reformed in recent weeks and under the guidance of Gio and his Dutch backroom team the Gers have won their last four fixtures.

As part of this, Borna has caught the eye of Gio and the Dutchman is determined to keep Barisic around beyond the January transfer window.

Likewise, it appears there’s growing momentum at Ibrox under the tutelage of the ex-Feyenoord coach and former Netherlands playing captain and Barisic is determined to be a part of it.

The report comes amid links between Borna and former manager Steven Gerrard, who is now in charge of Aston Villa.

Borna Barisic linked with Premier League Rangers reunion

Back in November, the Sunday Mirror (21/11, p72) claimed that Stevie G was considering raiding former side Rangers to take Borna Barisic down south to the tune of £8m.

Matt Target holds the slot but according to the Sun, Villa are casting their net far and wide for a replacement with the club having “cash to spend”.

But if the Daily Star report is accurate should Gerrard and co be seriously considering entering the market for a left back then reports suggest it won’t be for Borna Barisic.

Croatian Barisic has been earning the plaudits of supporters for his improved performances under Giovanni van Bronckhorst with Rangers fans noticing an upturn in the player’s defensive game.

van Bronckhorst finished his career at left-back after initially starting out as a midfielder and played there extensively for Barcelona and the Dutch national team.

There’s certainly bound to be some wisdom the ex-Netherlands star can impart on Borna with the Croatian international also contracted to Ibrox until 2024 at the earliest.

Speaking of that Villa interest, amid an upturn in form perhaps Steven Gerrard won’t be calling on his former Rangers squad to replace Matt Targett after all.
