Rangers remain in the hunt for Bayern Munich attacking midfielder Malik Tillman, but are not likely to sign the young USA international.

According to the Daily Record, all is not lost just yet when it comes to the 20-year-old, who spent last season on loan at Ibrox from the Bundesliga champions.

The claims come after reports spread this week that Bayern Munich had “cancelled” the widely reported option-to-buy that had been inserted into the original Malik Tillman loan deal.

The latest suggests that, amid much interest from the Premier League, Bayern Munich have ripped up the agreement thanks to a clause in the contract which has acted as a contingency.

As a result, Rangers have received around £1m in compensation and will also receive around 10% of any future Malik Tillman transfer fee as the player lines up a summer exit from Germany, just not to Ibrox.

Rangers still in Malik Tillman hunt?

According to those reports, Rangers would’ve had to pay up to £5.8m to sign the attacking midfielder from Bayern Munich and, looking at the bright side, this would potentially free these funds up to invest elsewhere.

However, according to the Record, Rangers remain interested in Malik Tillman despite the latest Bayern news, even if a deal “is now looking increasingly unlikely”.

Malik Tillman scored 12 goals for Rangers last season, with the attacking midfielder picking up the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year award at the end of the campaign.

There is a suggestion that if Tillman wanted the move to Rangers, then it might’ve happened, but the Bayern loanee has his sights set on testing himself at a higher level.

Rangers are the proverbial big fish in a little pond in Scotland and whilst attracting the likes of Malik Tillman is an exciting prospect, perhaps this move was always a little unrealistic.

But according to the Daily Record, for those clinging on to any hope the attacking midfielder might join Rangers, a potential deal with Bayern is not completely out of the picture just yet.
