A Sky Sports report has suggested that Jermain Defoe would be willing to sign a new contract at Rangers amid uncertainty regarding his future.

Defoe’s current deal expires this summer and for some time it looked likely that he would be released, given the lack of movement on an extension and his relative shortage of playing time this season.

However, earlier this week, Steven Gerrard confirmed that initial talks had been opened with the veteran [Sky Sports].

At that stage, the manager wasn’t sure what path his former England teammate wanted to go down and was keen to give him sufficient time to weigh up his options.

Now, though, a Sky Sports report has asserted that Defoe wants to be tied down by the Gers until the summer of 2022.

It’s suggested that the prospect of playing in front of the club’s fans again is a major motivation for the 38-year-old.

Defoe has only received 589 minutes of playing time so far this season and was omitted from the club’s Europa League squad as the coaching staff looked to manage his workload.

However, he still oozes quality inside the box and has produced six goals, the most recent of which coming in last weekend’s 4-1 Old Firm win at Ibrox.

Defoe’s overall record since joining Rangers on an initial 18-month loan from Bournemouth in January 2019 is impressive, as he’s netted 31 goals and notched ten assists from 70 appearances, despite many of his outings coming from the bench.

Should he sign a new deal, it would leave Gerrard with plenty of options at the top end of the pitch, with Alfredo Morelos, Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten and new pre-contract signing Fashion Sakala all on course to be at the club next season.

In other news, Rangers are currently outperforming the likes of Man City, Bayern Munich and Barcelona in a key area.
