Rangers have been scouting Blackpool attacker Jerry Yates in recent weeks as they eye up a bargain summer move.

The Gers are in the market for a new striker or two this summer with Alfredo Morelos likely to move on.

Add in injury problems for both Kemar Roofe and Antonio Colak, and it’s clear that Rangers need to add some attacking talent.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon now claims that Rangers are continuing to track Blackpool forward Jerry Yates.

It’s stated that Rangers scout John Brown has watched Yates in action twice in recent weeks.

Rangers are understood to have a long-standing interest in Yates and this latest scouting trip only adds to that idea.

The report claims that Yates has previously been valued at around £5million but Blackpool would now likely take less.

The Tangerines are edging towards relegation from the Championship and they may need to sell a player like Yates.

Add in that Yates will only have a year left on his contract and Rangers may be in a strong position to land a knockdown deal.

Jerry Yates has been through a very up-and-down season

Yates certainly has talent.

The 26-year-old was in the Rotherham United ranks before really thriving with Blackpool.

23 goals in the 2020-21 season saw Yates emerge as a real star for the Tangerines and eight goals in his first Championship campaign with the club was a decent start.

Yates has scored 13 times this season but that doesn’t really tell the full story.

Yates started the season with just two goals in his first 12 games before scoring seven times in five outings.

The streaky nature of Yates was there for all to see as he then went on a staggering no goals in 18 Championship games.

Then, out of nowhere, Yates found his shooting boots again with four goals in four games before drawing a blank against West Bromwich Albion in midweek.

Yates seems to go on bursts of form and then goes quiet again, something that may keep him from really kicking on in his career.

Rangers seem to like Yates but we would question whether this is really the type of signing that would bring a league title to Ibrox.

This type of inconsistency at 26 is a concern for us and even if Blackpool slash their asking price, we wonder if there may be better options out there.
