Report provides update after Rangers linked with surprise move for David Bates

A fresh report has provided an update after Rangers were linked with a surprise move for former player David Bates [Fussball Nachrichten].

Following a development loan from Raith Rovers, Bates spent the 2017/18 season at Ibrox, racking up 28 appearances in all competitions.

However, he was released when his one-year contract came to an end and he headed for Germany to join now-partner club Hamburger SV.

Bates also has 28 HSV appearances to his name but has spent the past two seasons out on loan at Sheffield Wednesday and Cercle Brugge respectively.

Last week, Homme du Match reported (via Glasgow Live) that the Gers were keen to bring the 24-year-old back to Ibrox and were ‘set’ to make an offer.

Newly promoted Premier League club Brentford were also credited with interest.

A Rangers swoop always seemed unlikely, though, given the number of centre-backs already at the club and the fact that Bates has struggled to kick on since leaving Glasgow in 2018.

And now, a report from German outlet Fussball Nachrichten has rubbished the link.

It’s asserted that the Gers aren’t interested in bringing Bates back and that right now, despite his agents ‘probing the market’, there are no concrete offers on the table from any club.

It’s also asserted that he isn’t in the plans of new HSV manager Tim Walter and therefore he will not play in the Bundesliga 2., despite there being a year left on his contract.

Therefore, the 6ft 4″ stopper is having to train with the reserves to stay fit while he waits for a development.

Bates in limbo

It’s no great surprise that this link has been rubbished, given that Rangers are already well-stocked at centre-back, with Connor Goldson, Filip Helander, Leon Balogun, Jack Simpson, Nikola Katic and Leon King all under contract.

Bates is a talented defender with four senior Scotland caps but he wouldn’t improve on the options already at Ibrox.

He’s in a difficult position right now, given the apparent lack of interest, with clubs perhaps put off by the prospect of having to pay a transfer fee.

There’s still time for something to happen before the end of the window, though, and as we’ve said before, it’s important that his next move is to a club where he’ll play regularly.

In other transfer news, a Rangers-supporting ‘prolific goalscorer’ has officially joined a new club.
