Rangers could now see former defender Calvin Bassey make a move to the Premier League with Fulham moving for the Ajax man.

It’s only a year since Rangers sold Bassey to Dutch giants Ajax in a huge deal.

The Nigerian defender developed into a star under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, shining as Rangers reached the Europa League final.

Bassey, a bargain £230,000 capture from Leicester City in 2020, grew into a fine defender and was what many teams were seeking – a left-footed centre back.

Ajax pounced, striking a deal worth around £19.6million rising to almost £23million according to Sky Sports.

Rangers fans saw a lot of potential in Bassey but his first season at Ajax didn’t quite go to plan.

Bassey never really seemed to settle in and patchy performances mean that speculation surrounds his future in Amsterdam.

Fulham launch bid for ex-Rangers star Calvin Bassey

The Athletic now report that Fulham have made a first bid for Bassey.

It’s stated that Fulham have sent an offer in writing to Ajax, worth around £15million.

That would mean Ajax taking a loss on Bassey after just a year at the club and they have a lot to think about as they weigh up his future.

Brighton and Hove Albion have also been showing an interest in Bassey, who clearly still has major admirers in the Premier League despite his shaky year with Ajax.

Brighton and Fulham are both chasing left-footed centre backs and could now do battle over Bassey.

Rangers hero David Weir serves as Brighton’s technical director, so he will have a major say in a move for Bassey but now risks missing out.

Rangers fans will want the best for Bassey but a sell-on clause can be ruled out here.

Rangers Review claim that the sell-on clause in Ajax’s deal only applies to profit rather than the full transfer fee.

If Ajax sell Bassey for anything less than they paid, Rangers won’t get anything – and that currently looks likely as Fulham push to land the defender.
