Report linking Rabbi Matondo with move from Rangers to EFL giants shot down

Rabbi Matondo is reportedly not on Leeds United’s transfer wish list this month after he was linked with a move to Elland Road from Rangers.

The Welshman signed for the Ibrox giants in the summer of 2022 for a fee of £2.5m but hasn’t exactly set the heather alight in Glasgow.

Bar a tremendous goal against Celtic in the Old Firm derby last campaign which deservedly won the Rangers Goal of the Season award, Matondo hasn’t been convincing.

The winger is prone to inconsistency and has also missed a number of games due to injury. The 23-year-old hasn’t started for Philippe Clement this season but has featured as a substitute in games against Hearts, Motherwell and Dynamo Kyiv.

Football Scotland reporter Mark Hendry wrote on Thursday evening that Matondo expects to be moved out of Rangers before the close of the window.

And he reported that EFL Championship giants Leeds United were ‘strongly interested’ in securing the services of Rabbi Matondo for their Premier League promotion push.

Rabbi Matondo ‘not’ a Leeds target

However, the claim has been shot down by the Yorkshire Evening Post in a fresh update published on Friday morning.

The outlet claim Daniel Farke’s Leeds United are not pursuing Rabbi Matondo, who used to be on the books at Manchester City.

They wrote: “Leeds United are not seeking to bring Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo to Elland Road at this time, despite reports north of the border suggesting the Whites were eyeing up the Wales international.”

Two weeks of the transfer window remain and Leeds are said to be expected to recruit wingers before time runs out.

But it won’t be Rabbi Matondo and as such, the Welshman’s future at Rangers remains unclear because he doesn’t appear to be central to Clement’s plans.

Matondo Rangers exit wouldn’t be shock

He would likely be utilised as a squad player with Vaclav Cerny, Scott Wright and Ross McCausland all ahead in the pecking order at the moment.

Rangers do need to ship players out of the squad before they can buy however, so Matondo may be one of those who are made available for sale.

It’s all speculation at the moment but it wouldn’t be a huge shock if Matondo was not at Rangers on August 31.

Meanwhile, Todd Cantwell and Ianis Hagi are certainly two players Clement would like to sell to free up much-needed funds before more new arrivals can be secured.
