A report has provided an update on Rangers’ stance regarding key player Connor Goldson, with the January transfer window now open [Daily Record].

Gers vice-captain Goldson has been an automatic pick at centre-back at Ibrox since he was signed from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2018.

However, his future at the club is unclear.

The four-year contract he signed upon arrival in Glasgow has entered its final six months and despite a lot of talk about the situation over the first half of the season, nothing has been resolved.

With the January transfer window now open, the Daily Record have issued an update on the situation.

They report that the Gers are readying a fresh extension offer for the 29-year-old.

However, it’s also asserted that they are preparing for the possibility that he could move on for nothing in the summer.

It’s claimed that possibility won’t tempt the club to try to offload him for a fee this month, though, with the quest to defend the Premiership title taking priority.

Rangers adopting right approach with Goldson?

If this really is Rangers’ current plan of attack regarding Goldson, it’s a sensible one.

Ideally, the player who’s been a near ever-present in the starting XI for several seasons, first under Steven Gerrard and now under Gio van Bronckhorst, will commit his future to the club.

However, if he isn’t prepared to do that and wants to return to England, then it would be better if he left for nothing in the summer rather than now, for what would still be a fraction of his true value.

Letting him go in this window would risk destabilising the whole defence and after all, with nearly 200 appearances, scores of clean sheets, 17 goals, a historic league title and possibly more silverware to come, Rangers will definitely have got their money’s worth out of the centre-back by the time his current deal expires.

Meanwhile, Rangers have reportedly made contact with a Premier League club regarding a winger.
