Report gives update after Rangers linked with swoop for Newcastle forward

Online rumours which linked Rangers with a January swoop for Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle have been rubbished in a Daily Record report.

On Sunday afternoon, the Record’s transfer blog (16:03) posted an update claiming that Rangers had distanced themselves from the idea of a loan move for the Premier League striker, asserting that no talks had taken place between the clubs.

The update comes after speculation on social media across the weekend.

29-year-old Gayle, who has been a Newcastle player since 2016, is goalless in the English top-flight so far this campaign, despite having netted 23 times whilst on loan with West Brom in the Championship last season.

Rangers not in for Newcastle attacker – Verdict

It’s no surprise to see Rangers linked with a move for another striker, given that Steven Gerrard currently only has two senior forwards to call upon in Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe.

However, while Gayle himself may fancy another loan move considering his relative lack of Premier League game time so far this season, it’s unlikely Rangers will be able to prize any player from Newcastle for the foreseeable future.

The ongoing legal battle between the Gers and Magpies owner, Mike Ashley, isn’t exactly conducive to strong transfer relations.

Plenty of Bears will be hoping the club do enter the market for an extra attacking option, though, particularly a targetman-type striker, to beef up the squad for the Premiership run-in.
