Rangers starlet Alex Lowry should go on loan to play regularly away from Ibrox this season to help his development.
The 20-year-old is regarded as one of the best young talents at the club, and he has made a handful of first-team appearances since making his debut last year.
An attacking midfielder who can also play on the wings, his technical ability is what makes him stand out, and he has the potential to become a key player for Rangers in the future.
He has been linked with clubs in the English third and fourth divisions, who want the Uddingston-born midfielder on loan, and this could be the best step for his development.
Rangers’ stacked midfield
Although staying at the club and developing under Michael Beale could be good for Lowry, he is unlikely to gain many opportunities given the options at Ibrox, and he needs senior minutes to push on in his career.
Rangers have brought in Kieran Dowell, who has reunited with former Norwich City star Todd Cantwell in Glasgow, and the two will be ahead of Lowry in the pecking order.
A deal is expected to be completed soon for midfielder Jose Cifuentes, whilst the likes of Ianis Hagi and Tom Lawrence will further block any path to the first team.
Lowry was described as “remarkable” by former youth team manager Graeme Murty, and the 20-year-old’s progress will likely be monitored closely by the club, who will rate him highly.
A loan could help him translate his strong end-product, which has seen him score 11 goals in 15 games for Rangers B, to a senior level, and he could return in a year’s time as a genuine contender for first-team football.
Whilst there is merit in keeping him at the club to learn Beale’s style and develop in sporadic appearances, regular football at a different level could help him mature quickly to bridge the gap between youth team and senior level football at Rangers.
