Rangers Academy defender Danny Finlayson has been invited to train with St Mirren ahead of a potential loan with an option to buy move, according to the Scottish Sun.

Finlayson is under contract at Ibrox until 2021 but has recently been on loan with Orange County SC in the United States.

As part of the recently established partnership between the clubs, the 19-year-old headed to California with Cammy Palmer and Matthew Shiels for his first taste of senior football.

He made 12 appearances in the USL Championship, often starting alongside former Gers defender Rob Kiernan in the heart of defence.

However, Orange County’s hopes of making the playoffs were dashed by a defeat to LA Galaxy II on Thursday, so their season ended with a 4-2 win over Las Vegas Lights on Sunday.

The Scottish Sun now reports that St Mirren are looking to take advantage of the early end to the Northern Ireland youth international’s spell in the US.

It’s claimed that the Buddies have invited him to train at Ralston ahead of a potential loan deal with a view to a permanent switch.

Rangers Academy defender invited to train with St Mirren ahead of switch – Verdict

It’s a little surprising that Rangers appear to be open to a permanent departure for Finlayson so soon after his US adventure.

After impressing with the Gers in the UEFA Youth League last season, he looked to be a player to watch for the future and he hardly disgraced himself during his time with OCSC, where he contributed to five clean sheets.

He may still be young, but the Northern Ireland U19 international stands at an imposing 6ft 3″ and is comfortable with the ball at his feet.

However, perhaps the player feels he’s ready to push for first-team football and given the options Steven Gerrard currently has at his disposal, it’s hard to see a route into the Gers XI for several years.
