Rangers won’t be short of offers if Ben Davies is off-loaded

Rangers fans saw Ben Davies redemption begin at Hampden Park, either that or he put himself in the shop window for potential suitors.

High profile errors have seen the 27-year old centre-half be written off in some quarters and even the reported £4M price tag branded a waste of money.

If Ben Davies is sold by Rangers this summer, we won’t be short of offers.

It isn’t the judgement of fans that determine value or quality, football has changed, and the former Liverpool defender ticks a lot of boxes for a lot of clubs.

Last season, Davies spent time at Sheffield United on loan and with the Blades securing promotion back to the Premier League, a return could well be possible.

They have two central defenders out of contract or leaving and Chris Basham will be 35. They need to recruit.

Then there is the analysis of Davies during his time at Sheffield United where he was labelled “cream of the crop” when compared to every other centre-half in England’s lower leagues.

Why will Rangers be in a good position to sell Ben Davies?

It was recruitment analyst Liam Henshaw who made the claim in an article for The Athletic about the Gers stopper when he was in the Championship.

Speaking at the time Henshaw said:

“A progressive defender in every sense; a player who can carry the ball out from the back and one who has a terrific range of passing.

“He ranks second for successful progressive passes and he does this while still being strong defensively. If he’s not in Liverpool’s plans after his loan move, there will be a lot of clubs looking at him.”

Nothing has really changed.

Davies was winning nearly 80% of his defensive duels in the Championship, hardly the profile of someone deemed too lightweight for Rangers.

His reputation is solid and, at £4m, there is every chance that we will, at least, get our money back if we choose to sell him.

After all, he was out performing Joe Worrall and his valuation was set at over £10m by Nottingham Forest – now that, is silly money.
