The Daily Record reports that St Mirren are ‘closing in’ on the loan signing of Rangers winger Glenn Middleton as the Gers look to trim their first-team squad.
The Scotland U21 international scored a penalty for the Development team in a win over Motherwell at the weekend, but it could prove to be his final act in a Gers jersey, at least this season.
Middleton played 24 times for the first-team over the first half of last season but has since dramatically fallen out of favour.
He would register just three appearances over the second half of the 2018/19 campaign, before being shipped out on loan to Hibs in August.
It was hoped that he would get plenty of playing time at Easter Road and be able to polish some of the weaker areas of his game.

However, he made just seven appearances under Paul Heckingbottom and failed to make a matchday squad following the appointment of Jack Ross, with the deal terminated in December.
Apparently no closer to the Gers first team, despite Sheyi Ojo and Brandon Barker’s struggles, the 20-year-old didn’t travel to Dubai and it seems is close to sealing another temporary exit.
Theoretically, game time should be easier to come by at St Mirren, where his pace and creativity will be much appreciated in their bid to avoid the drop.
Signing an extension last October, Middleton is contracted at Ibrox until 2023 [Rangers.co.uk], so in theory, he has time to get it right.
However, unless he tears it up at St Mirren Park and forces his way into Gerrard’s plans, the club may look to earn a fee by moving him on permanently in the summer.
