Despite signing Ben Godfrey on loan from Atalanta, Rangers are looking to bring in another centre-back.

Nasser Djiga and Derek Cornelius were on loan last season at Ibrox and have returned to their parent clubs, leaving the Light Blues with two centre-backs shy.

Derek McInnes wants another centre-back over the next few weeks as John Souttar looks likely to leave.

The Scotland international has not even travelled with the squad to Spain as discussions continue over his future.

Rangers want to sign Olwethu Makhanya

Sky Sports have reported that Rangers are keen on signing Philadelphia Union centre-back Olwethu Makhanya.

The 22-year-old centre-back was part of the South Africa squad that exceeded expectations at the World Cup.

Makhanya has another year left on his contract at the MLS outfit, and a move could be on the cards for him this summer.

What is your reaction to the new third kit?

It's fair to say a lot of Rangers fans have hated it…

McInnes and the Gers hierarchy are considering the defender who has made 53 appearances for his club and has international experience under his belt as well.

What Rangers fans would like to know is that Makhanya held his ground against Lionel Messi in an MLS game.

Footage emerged of the centre-back “bullying” the Argentina legend as he used his physicality to prevent the attacker from having his way.

How Derek McInnes can get the best out of Makhanya?

Makhanya stands at 6ft 2in and would be a good set-piece threat.

Another thing for which he is lauded is his leadership ability, so McInnes will look to him to organise the backline.

The South Africa international is also comfortable at building out from the back and is adept at his positioning.

McInnes will have to be careful with his game time, as he will need some time to adapt from the MLS, as the Scottish Premiership is a completely different ball game.

The Gers boss likes his teams organised out of possession, and Makhanya would undoubtedly be a good fit for his side.

At 22, he would not only strengthen the first team, but offer a high resale value, so this is a deal the club need to do.
